Got this from a fellow "Alien" no candy and flowers - no Happy, Happy.
Mothers' Day was originally started after the Civil War, as a protest to the carnage of that war, by women who had lost their sons. Here is the original Mothers' Day Proclamation from 1870.
Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of fears!

My how time flys when you're having fun - it's February already! Since we are embarking on President Bush's second term (also know in some circles as the next reign of terror) - here are just a few financial tidbits we can all take with us on our descent...I mean journey.According to the Congressional Budget Office, the year before President Bush took office, the entire Social Security surplus went for Social Security - none of it was borrowed to pay for other tax cuts or spending.

The good news, the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. The bad news, every team who has won the World Series since 2001 hasn't been back since. After the exciting and bitter cold World Series of 2001 in which the Arizona Diamond backs celebrated their first championship ever, ending the three year reign of the Yankees, hope burned once again in the hearts of Red Sox and all the other teams in Baseball. Goliath had been slain by a team only in it's six year of existence.

So here's the deal. If you want to hear Kerry and or Edwards on the stump all you have to do is show up. That's right folks. Go to Kerry's web page, find out the schedule, hop in your car and
listen to the man in person. It really is that simple.

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today.
1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.
3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.

I would probably know just how to deal
With all of you
And I feel
like I've been here before..."
DejaVu - David Crosby
FYI: The only people that have specific plans for dealing with Al Qaeda and North Korea are Wes Clark and Howard Dean...
Oh but, sorry...you don't get to vote for them.

Remember when the U.S. Supreme Court coronated George W. Bush?
Those crazy Republicans. (I use the word crazy because the editor here at WA says I can't call them what I normally call them.) Not to be outdone the Democratic Party, with no small help from main stream media, is well on their way to annointing the democratic presidential nominee. Oh hell, who needs these pesky primaries anyway?

On November 27, 2002, after one year of persistent
and aggressive lobbying by the families of victims of September 11, and with the support of Democratic and Republican Congressmen, President George W. Bush finally signed a bill creating the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (9/11 Independent Commission).Since that time the 9/11 Commission, working under an 18- month
deadline, has met with slow responses from the CIA, Department of Defense, Department of Justice, and Homeland Security.

I'm a New York Yankee fan. I was born and raised in New York so don't think I'm one of those guys who just jump on the winning team's bandwagon. So of course I am somewhat biased in my thought's on what happened in the ALCS playoff game in Boston Saturday...
For those who have no idea what went on I can only say I have never witnessed a more disturbing sight in a professional sports game in my life. Boston's pitching ace, 31 year old Pedro Martinez grabbed the Yankees 71-year-old coach, Don Zimmer by the head and threw him to the ground.

The recent success of the war effort in Iraq might make you think that the United States wouldn't hesitate to seriously consider going up against North Korea if the nuclear dispute between our two countries can't be resolved diplomatically. Think again...

You know, if I had twenty million or so laying around I would give it to the Soviets right now if they would guarantee me that I could catch a ride with them to the space station and not have to come back...
Al Gore: For The Sake Of The Nation - Reconsider
Al Gore has opted out of the running for 2004. We are all doomed. The Democratic Party is left with as sad a bunch of losers as I have ever seen.

As we stand on the eve of War, I find myself in unfamiliar territory. Questioning the intentions of our leaders. To understand how we have come to be in this situation, we look briefly to the past. The one-sided War
Late in 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein having become frustrated with other oil producing nations refusing to hike prices, and sensing overly paranoid threats, invaded neighboring Kuwait.

In a September 17th article I wrote for the Future Shock section, I described under a headline titled "
Rockem' Sockem' Saddam " a celebrity boxing match between Saddam Hussein and President Bush. It appears that the Vice President of Iraq, Taha Yassin Ramadan has been reading Waving Alien because he offered a similar solution to the differences between the two Presidents. A Duel...Iraq has two Vice Presidents by the way. The other one is Taha Muhie-eldin Marouf.

This will be but one of many reflections you will read concerning last years terrorist attacks on America. Probably many will begin with the same opening statement I chose. Probably many will say or express the same feelings but use different words from a different point of view.
These are my thoughts...

I asked my son recently if he found anything even vaguely disturbing about all the memorial services planned for the one year anniversary of September 11. I believe I asked him this question right around the same time every talking head on television began interviewing advertising executives to find out how their clients were planning to handle 9/11. He gave me a somewhat quizzical look. I asked him if he was bothered by all the different stations that were advertising their 9/11 programming. He said, 'No, I don't find it disturbing…just sad.''Yes,' I said, 'it is sad and uncomfortable and more than a little disturbing. In fact I find it all very disturbing.' He looked surprised and asked me why I felt that way. At the time I had no answer for him. I could only shake my head. I've thought about our conversation every day since. How could I not? The date was fast approaching and each day brought increasing news coverage and…hype. The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, MSNBC, CNN all advertising their own specials, the local newspaper with a full page ad listing various community memorials , every church and firehouse sign I passed and today my e:mail filled with ads urging me to send a 9/11 card to everyone I know…

I'd like to talk about a few of the ways educational budget cuts have affected me and people I know. I don't claim to stay on top of every news story about budget cuts, and I am not as savvy about current events as The Hal, The Mike, and Tewa. But I can tell you what I've seen, and what's pissed me off. The community college I attended had the third most active Writing Center of all colleges and universities in North Carolina. The only schools that were more successful than us were UNC at Chapel Hill and UNC at Wilmington. I was an English tutor there for two years. The year after I left, the Writing Center's funding was cut- three days before classes began. The WC was shut down, and suddenly the students were without English tutors, and the tutors were without jobs. Apparently, the ability to write coherently is not considered a necessary commodity in the "real world."

There is no denying that technology can make our lives easier. Depending on what kind of person you are, it can also make our lives more complex. Who knows what the future might bring? Computers: Today's barn burner is tomorrows turtle.

Did I ever mention that I'm afraid of the dark? Is it an irrational fear or justified paranoia? How many monster movies have you seen in which the monster shows up in broad daylight? Yes, I know there are a few, but the vast majority of monsters are shrouded in shadow filled darkness offering only brief glimpses of the horrors that await you...So you say my fear is still irrational? How do you know? How do you know what you are missing in the darkness, hidden in the shadows and behind closed closet doors? I have a favorite saying. "Look the other way, and you'll never see what you missed." I live by it, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

What makes us think we're so special or unique in the scheme of things? How can we be so conceited or vain as to think we are the only life form populating one of the billions of planets in the universe, or that their aren't different levels, forms, or degrees of life... or after life for that matter? What do you see or imagine when you look into the night sky. Do you see a bunch of pretty, sparkling little stars, or do you see distant suns separated from us by the vastness of space? Suns that might support life to the planets that might be revolving around them. Can you even conceive the possibility of that, or are you one of the many who choose to believe we are so special, that our sun and the earth is so unique as to be the only place life as we know it could possibly exist? And there lies the key, life as we know it...

I propose to consider the question "Can machines think?" This should begin with definitions of the meaning of the terms "machine" and "think." The Turing Test is meant to determine if a computer program has intelligence. Quoting Turing, the original imitation game can be described as follows:

I wrote this opinion piece as a direct response to Richard Baimbridge‘s article in Wired magazine entitled ‘Why Gamers Are Athletes’.“Tomato, not Tahmato”
One first has to consider the definition of Athlete, as written from dictionary.com, "A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts."

I wonder if I am the only one who understands what is actually going on. Does anyone find it interesting that on the U.S. mediator's arrival, Anthony Zinni, that the Israelis are suddenly pulling out of Ramallah? What a coincidence! What has been going on the past six months? The US was attacked by terrorists, almost three thousand citizens and rescue workers were murdered. The US declared war (unofficially) on the terrorists. The Taliban were supporting the terrorists, the Al Quada. They wouldn't give Bin Laden or the Al Quada up.

OK - How many of you out there laughed when you first heard the INS had sent 'Welcome To The Neighborhood' packets to two of the World Trade Center terrorists? Come on, raise your hands. Well I did. Not a huge ribald, rib sticking laugh, more like a shake your head, irony filled, laugh or you'll cry sort of laugh.

Well, maybe not completely different...but kind of different. After much discussion and brew-ha-ha concerning what is an editorial, what is an essay and what is a column, The Hal and I have decided that we do not agree (this should not come as a surprise to anyone). Since neither one of us suffers from an incurable case of journalism schoolitis we have resolved our differences by simply allowing for both parties creative vision. I believe this final bit of meaningful dialogue we had aptly represents our attitudes concerning this subject.
